Commercial motor vehicle crashes pose a significant threat to public health, with speeding, distraction and fatigue being major contributing factors. These crashes cause thousands of fatalities and injuries annually, with a disproportionate impact on vulnerable road users. This session presents two studies that leveraged emerging technologies to enhance CMV safety, exploring the effectiveness of real-time driver alerts and AI technology for high-risk driving behavior prevention. You’ll learn about the potential of scalable safety tools, such as in-cab alerts and AI-driven systems, to address high-risk driving behaviors in this population. You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of the safety challenges associated with CMVs and the potential of emerging technologies to address them; practical insights into the design and implementation of scalable safety tools; and the implications for policy, fleet management and technology integration.
