Drilling Into Safety: A Case Study in Data-Driven Safety Training Development for Environmental and Geotechnical Drilling Oversight
Approved 3

After using safety data e-tools to track trends for environmental and geotechnical drilling projects, AECOM recognized that many of our drilling safety events were related to utility strikes and equipment malfunctions. Although our annual training contained modules on drilling safety, it was clear we needed to do something more to increase awareness of drilling-related hazards by bringing in subject matter experts. Two safety professionals, a former drill rig operator and a professional geologist partnered with our drilling contractors to develop in-person training for all staff providing oversight of drilling operations. After a year-long rollout, we observed a significant reduction in incidents. In this session, you’ll learn about our training and how its many real-world scenarios help trainees understand events that could lead to incidents, as well as control measures to help prevent them.
