The Future of EHS: Using the Discoveries of Neuroscience to Lead Safety More Effectively
Approved 2
Leaders invest heavily in eliminating hazards, improving systems and getting people to keep safety front of mind. These have helped improve safety for 50 years and will continue to do so. Today, we do more for safety than ever before – and we do it better. Yet, serious injuries and fatalities have not decreased in more than 10 years in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and many other countries. Leaders understand that having knowledge is one thing, but doing something safely is quite another. Training is not enough. In this session, we’ll discuss why modern-day safety initiatives need leaders to collaborate with the workforce from a “whole-of-brain” perspective. You’ll learn why leaders need to “know the way” (understand that what people do is driven by the conscious and the subconscious, and which mind gets “control” depends on the situation), “show the way” (influence people by coaching using specific techniques for each mind) and “go the way” (be an active participant and model the right behavior). When leaders use the whole-of-brain approach, significant safety improvement occurs.
