What Neuroscience Teaches Us About People Behaving Safely and How We Can Use It to Improve Safety
The latest discoveries of neuroscience are reshaping our understanding of what drives human behavior and how we can use it to improve safety. Up until 15 years ago, before neuroscience discoveries came along, we had an incomplete picture of what drove behavior and tried many things to influence it – with varying success. The common view was that all behavior was conscious, or could be made to be conscious – especially if it involved safety. We now know that’s not the full story. Most of what drives what people do originates in the subconscious and isn’t 100% controlled consciously. Most of what we have done for safety in the last 50 years can be distilled down to fix the work environment, improve the system or get people to think more consciously about safety. That works, and we need to continue to do it, but only up to a point by itself. This session will explore the discoveries of neuroscience and how they can be used to improve the effectiveness of Safety I and Safety II
